Swimming with Hair Extensions 101
The weather is warming up here in Colorado (finally!!) and we are feelin’ all the summer energy. We wouldn’t be your true hair besties if we didn’t prepare you on how to swim with Hand-tied Hair Extensions! Here’s everything you need to know about how to not damage your extensions, preserve your hair color, and even a couple myths about swimming with extensions!
First things first, let’s bust the myth about not being able to swim with hair extensions. Now don’t get us wrong - there are definitely hair extension methods out there that should not be combined with the pool or ocean water, but if you’re wearing NBR (Natural Beaded Rows), IBE (Invisible Beaded Extensions), or another hand-tied method, sun exposure / swimming is 100% okay!
All you need to do is make sure you’re aware of the proper ways to protect and care for your hair throughout the process!
Here are our top tips for caring for your extensions before, during and after water & sun exposure:
Before
It’s important to protect your hair from elements like the sun, saltwater, sunscreen, and chlorine. These can cause dryness, damage, and discoloration! Using a heat/UV protectant, like Oribe’s Invisible Defense, will protect your hair against the harsh rays of the sun. Another great way to protect your hair while in the sun for extended periods of time is with an accessory like a bandana or a hat!
Tip: Did you know that sunscreen can cause discoloration in your extension hair? Blondes especially! Make sure to wear your hair up before applying so it doesn’t touch your hair.
During
If you’re someone who loves to get your hair wet while you’re swimming, there are a few styles that can help prevent tangling while you’re in mermaid mode!
Pigtail braids (french or regular will do the trick)
Ponytail Braids
If you prefer to keep your hair dry, a high bun should work great!
After
Once you’re out of the water, it’s important to cleanse and refresh your hair ASAP to prevent dryness and tangling!
If you aren’t able to wash your hair right away, no worries! Reapply Oribe’s Invisible Defense and brush through with your WetBrush to soften and detangle your hair until you can get to the shower!
