Why are Hair Extensions so Expensive?

With hair extensions becoming more and more popular, there are more methods than ever and a lot of salons are starting to offer them. It is amazing that everybody is finally learning how life changing extensions are, however, there are a lot of variables that go into high quality hair extensions.

The phrase “You Get What You Pay For” really does apply to hair extensions. Not all “Hand-tied” methods are the same, and there are many reasons why price points can be very different.

There are three major things that go into the quality of hair extensions:

  1. Training

Just like most hair techniques, mastering the art of hair extensions takes time. Getting certified in a luxury hair extension method takes weeks, months, and even years. Even after getting certified in a method, stylists still have to take the time to master that method with lots of practice.  A lot of new methods only require 1-2 day training classes with little to no certification standards. When looking into a salon/stylist to get extensions from, ask about their certification, licensing, and years of experience.

  1. Cost of Hair

The quality of the actual hair that is used in extensions makes a huge difference in the price and the finished product. A lot of stylists opt for the cheaper option of synthetic hair because it is cheaper and you have to replace it more often. Wefts that are made of real human hair cost more but looks and feels more natural. Because it is human hair you can style the extensions just like your natural hair, it feels and looks like natural hair, and it lasts way longer than synthetic hair.

  1. Skill Level

Training doesn’t just stop after you are certified in a hair extension method. Mastering the art of hair extensions takes time and practice. A more advanced/master stylist may charge more than a beginner stylist because they have mastered the method, they are faster at applying the extensions, and the finished product might be high quality.
